The European market as a whole continues to be characterized by a growing demand for beverage cans, which in the long term will ensure a full workload for our production facilities in Europe. In order to keep pace with the forecast double-digit growth rates in the demand for beverage cans in countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, and Croatia, we needed an additional plant located in Serbia.
Why Serbia?
- Because SEE is a growing market and Serbia offers a great access to it (SEE population is around 60 million, and we expect market to double in the next ten years);
- Because of highly skilled and well educated workforce;
- Because we want to develop the beverage market in close co-operation with our customers by being in their vicinity;
- Because Serbia itself is a strong soft drinks and beer market;
- Because of excellent government and local authority co-operation.
We are the first foreign industrial company to set up production facilities "on a green-field site" in Serbia, and we are, in some aspects, leading the way in Serbia. I can assure you that the new plant in Belgrade is technically just as modern, if not more modern than all our other plants in Europe.
Ball Packaging Europe hired some 120 employees. At the time of establishing the business the number of applicants was very high, they had an excellent level of training and most of them spoke fluent English. In addition, many of them have spent some time living or working abroad. I was positively impressed by the very high quality of the applicants.
So far, our expectations are met and we look forward to the future business in Serbia.
